"Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving." Ansel Adams
I love the way the gold dome of the Capitol building looms behind Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Atlanta.
I took this photo on a dreary winter day from the top of a parking garage. In my imagination, I saw a big lightning strike over the two buildings, so I made a composite piece to match the photo I saw in my mind. The church still stands because Fr. Thomas O'Reilly stood up to Sherman and told him it would be unjust and sinful to burn down churches and kill civilians in the city during the Civil War. There were a lot of Catholics in the Union Army and Sherman didn't want to risk a mutiny if he burned down the Catholic Church. In the end, he spared The Shrine of the Immaculate Conception as well as five other churches, City Hall, and the Courthouse.
